Standards: According to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Chinese National Standard (GB), different court levels have different requirements:
Amateur/Training: 150-300 Lux
Club Competition/Professional Training: 300-500 Lux
Professional Competition/TV Broadcast: 500-750 Lux and above
Recommendation: For a good playing experience, we recommend choosing a standard of at least 300 Lux. A simple formula for calculating the total required lumens: Total lumens = Court area (㎡) × Target illuminance (Lux) ÷ Luminous efficacy (lm/W) ÷ Utilization factor (usually 0.5-0.7). This calculation requires a professional, but it can help you understand the principle.
Illuminance Uniformity - "Is it Uniform?"
Definition: The ratio of the illuminance at the darkest point to the brightest point on the court. This is a more important metric than illuminance and directly impacts athletic performance.
Standard: The better the uniformity, the smoother the light transition, eliminating patches of bright and dark. This reduces visual fatigue for players and allows for more accurate judgment of the ball's trajectory.
Professional Requirements: Uniformity (U1) should be above 0.5, and (U2) should be above 0.7. Values closer to 1 are better.
How to Achieve: Uniformity is primarily determined by the number, layout, and lighting distribution angle of the lamps, not the brightness of individual lamps.
Glare Control - "Dazzling"
Definition: Excessive light directly or indirectly entering the eye, causing discomfort or impaired vision. Glare is a major concern in badminton venues, as it can affect players' judgment of high and long balls.
How to Control:
Select professional deep-shaded lamps: These lamps have a deep shielding angle that strictly controls light within the downward illumination range, avoiding direct exposure to the eye. Suitable mounting height and angle: The higher the lamp is mounted, the less glare there is. Professional venue lighting is typically installed at a height of over 8 meters. Frosted Lenses or Grilles: Using a frosted lens or honeycomb grille can soften the light output, effectively diffuse light, and reduce glare.
Color Rendering Index (CRI) - "How True Are the Colors?"
Definition: A measure of a light source's ability to reproduce the colors of objects, with a perfect score of 100.
Standard: For badminton courts, a CRI of >80 is recommended, with a CRI >90 being optimal. A high CRI makes the colors of white badminton balls, court lines, and flooring appear vivid and realistic, reducing errors caused by color casts.
Color Temperature (CCT) - "Is the light warm or cool?"
Definition: The color perception of light, measured in Kelvin (K).

Low color temperature (below 3000K): Warm yellow light, relaxing, not suitable for exercise.

III. Lighting Installation Plan (Layout and Height)
This is key to achieving good illumination and uniformity.
Side Lighting - The most common and recommended method: Arrange the lamps above the long sides of the court.
Advantages: Minimizes glare. The light comes from the side, offset from the players' primary line of sight (upward at the ball), making it very player-friendly. Uniform light distribution and minimal shadows.
Requirements: The recommended installation height for the luminaires is no less than 8 meters, and the luminaires should extend a certain distance beyond the end lines of the court to ensure adequate illumination of the baseline area.
Top Lighting
Method: Luminaires are evenly distributed directly above the court.
Advantages: Very uniform illumination.
Disadvantages: Requires extremely high anti-glare performance for the luminaires, which can easily result in severe glare if not properly addressed. It also requires a high ceiling height (usually over 10 meters), making it unsuitable for venues with limited ceiling height.
Applications: Mostly used in venues with high ceilings like basketball courts and no high-flying balls. This option is generally not preferred for badminton courts.
IV. Practical Purchasing Guide
Determine your budget and level: Is the venue for recreational use, professional training, or competition? This will determine your illumination standards and budget.
Measure the court dimensions: Accurately measure the length, width, and height (headroom). A standard badminton court typically measures 13.4m x 6.1m.
